Standardized test for intelligence assessment in adults and adolescents (from 16 years old), developed by David Wechsler. Currently in use version WAIS-IV (2008). Evaluates different cognitive abilities through 15 subtests grouped into 4 main indices: Verbal Comprehension (verbal reasoning, acquired knowledge), Perceptual Reasoning (visual-spatial problem-solving, fluid reasoning), Working Memory (attention, concentration, mental manipulation of information), Processing Speed (speed of visual information processing).
Provides: Total IQ (FSIQ), scores for each index, detailed cognitive profile. Individual administration by qualified psychologists, duration 60-90 minutes. Used for: intellectual disability diagnosis, neurological assessment, school/professional orientation, certifications for educational support. Interpretation considers not only IQ but also discrepancies between indices, strengths/weaknesses, contextual factors. Standardized on Italian population with specific norms. Limitations: influenced by culture, education, motivation; does not measure emotional or creative intelligence.
